WHAT IS NOUGAT?
Soft nougat is a traditional delicacy loved all over the world. The delicacy is made according to a traditional recipe that has lasted for centuries. Now what is nougat made of? The basic ingredients are honey, sugar, whipped egg whites, toasted nuts and/or dried fruit. The word ‘nougat’ comes from the Latin ‘nux gatum’, meaning ‘nut cake’.
THE ORIGINS OF NOUGAT CANDY
Nougat has its origins in the Byzantine Empire and was made as early as ancient times. In the Middle Ages, nougat grew in popularity in several Mediterranean countries, including France, Spain and Italy. Each of these countries created its own nougat variations over the years.
